Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, August 7, 2024 (2024)

Note: This page contains spoilers for the August 7, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please also note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on March 8, 2024.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literature & Religion) for Wednesday, August 7, 2024 (Season 40, Game 130):

This city now in Turkey is the addressee of one of the New Testament epistles & the setting for “The Comedy of Errors”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Emily Sands, a project manager from Chanhassen, Minnesota
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, August 7, 2024 (1)
Yogesh Raut, a social and personality psychologist from Vancouver, Washington
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, August 7, 2024 (2)
David Sibley, an Episcopal priest from Walla Walla, Washington
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, August 7, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Season 40’s encore presentations continue today with semifinal #2 from the 31st Tournament of Champions between Emily Sands, David Sibley, and Yogesh Raut; unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Emily’s and David’s respective victories during these encore presentations. In my initial preview back in March, I described this as “the Rose Bowl semifinal,” as it was between Minnesota’s Emily and Washington’s David and Yogesh.

As you’ll start to see in this game, Yogesh began being very complimentary towards Emily and the friendship bracelets that she made for the Tournament of Champions players in this one.

As I sarcastically said back in March, “I didn’t realize that Jeopardy! could write a Tournament of Champions Final Jeopardy about the New Testament epistles without making an authorship claim!”

This Final Jeopardy boils down to “Where is Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors set?”, with the New Testament side of the clue being enough to narrow down your guess if you know more about that half of the clue. I doubt it’ll be enough to keep the rage train from happening, though, from people who see red every time the Bible is even whispered on the show, even though the much more useful half of the clue is about Shakespeare. The Comedy of Errors is a well-known Shakespearean farce surrounding mistaken identity set in Ephesus, while Ephesians is one of a few epistles addressed to a group located in what is now Turkey (Colossians and Galatians are other examples).

Interestingly, Ephesus, known in antiquity as the site of the Temple of Artemis was abandoned completely by the 15th century, more than a century before The Comedy of Errors was written. The site of Ephesus is near the modern-day Turkish town of Selçuk.
