The sure hands of Sergio Peresson, master violin maker, produced more than 400 exquisite violins, violas and cellos, instruments that rival the work of Antonio Stradivari in the depth and clarity of their sound. That sound will continue in performances around the world, as will the legacy of Peresson, 78, who died Tuesday of a heart attack in his Haddonfield home. Norman Carol, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the owner of two Peresson violins, ranked Peresson as "the most outstanding maker" in the world. The unfinished pieces of Peresson's final violin are still in the one-room workshop on the second floor of his home. Sitting at his workbench, he had formed the back of the fiddle by piecing together fine wedges of maple that he had brought back from Germany.
With the trees outside his garret window awakening with new foliage, he had bent to his work, using tiny thumb planes to patiently scrape the maple to the correct thinness measured in fractions of millimeters to give the instrument its unique sound. Earlier in the year, Peresson, a native of Udine, Italy, had finished what were to be his last two violins each worth $25,000. They glowed like polished chestnuts, resting on shelves in a room beside his a room covered with photographs of admiring musicians a and conductors from around the world. "In my opinion, his output surpasses any living maker," Carol said. He left it to the musicians of a future era to judge the value of the instruments.
William Steck, concertmaster of the National Symphony in Washington and the owner of three Peressons, said a Peresson violin was "absolutely" the equal of the fabled Stradivarius that were crafted in Italy about 300 years ago. Steck said a committee of the symphony, in a blind test, selected Peresson violins over Stradivarius, Guarnerius and all the other legendary fiddles they heard. "His name will go on in history as have his famous predecessors'," Steck said. Lyricist Jack Yellen dead at age 97 The New York Times Jack Yellen, who wrote the lyrics for songs including "Happy Days Are Here Again," died Wednesday at his home in Springville, N. Y.
He was 97. He had been bedridden and under nursing care for 15 years, said Bob Buyer, a reporter for the Buffalo News and a friend of the family. Yellen wrote "Happy Days Are Here Again" in 1929, with Milton Ager, and it became a campaign song for the Democratic Party, although Yellen considered himself a Republican, Buyer said. Among other songs for which he wrote lyrics were "Down by the (1920), "I Wonder What's Become of Sally?" (1924), "Ain't She Sweet" (1927), "Hard-Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah" (1924) and "Are You Havin' Any Fun?" (1939), as well as "My Yiddisha Momme" (1925), one of many songs he wrote for Sophie Tucker. Writing in Variety in 1963, Yellen recalled: "Tucker it at the Palace the song and recitation in Ensang glish, then a chorus in Yiddish.
She made it a hit not only in this country but in Europe." He was on the board of ASCAP from 1951 to 1969. Post-Spanish Civil War poet Celeya dies The Associated Press MADRID, Spain Gabriel Celaya, the post-Civil War poet who became a leader literary protest against the right wing dictatorship of Gen. Francisco Franco, died Thursday in a Madrid hospital. He was 80. Celaya, who suffered for years from arteriosclerosis, died of cardiac arrest after a bout of internal bleeding, said a statement issued by Gregorio Maranon Hospital.
He had been hospitalized since April 3. Born in 1911 in the northern Basque town of Hernani, Celaya worked as an industrial engineer in his family business before publishing his first book of poems in 1935, La Marea del Silencio (Tide of Silence). Civil war broke out a year later and in 1939 conservative forces overthrew the second Spanish republic, ushering in Franco's long dictatorship. Originally known for his lyric poetry, Celaya gained fame as a leader of protest poets in the 1950s and 1960s. Pearlie Lee Uptain FITZGERALD Pearlie Lee Uptain, 86, of 511 W. Ohoopee St. died Wednesday in a local hospital. Born in Franklin County, she lived in Ben Hill County for the past 40 years, moving from Alabama. She was the widow of John Wesley Uptain and was the daughter of the late Robert and Emily Carpenter Mitchell.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pilot Hill Baptist Church in Vina, Ala. She attended Morning Side Baptist Church in Fitzgerald. Survivors: children, R.C. Uptain, Flossie Gills and Laverne Adair, all of Fitzgerald; sisters, Edna Hamrick of Nettleton, and Gwendola Belcher of Shottsville, 28 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and 22 great great grandchildren. Services: 4p.m.
today in Paulk Funeral Home, Fitzgerald. Burial: 4 p.m. Saturday in Pilot Hill Cemetery, Vina. The Rev. Jerry McDaniel will officiate.
