Martha was one of ten children; seven girls and three boys.Hers was a happy childhood amongsta close-knit family, living a modest but goodlife until WWII began.

Her family was torn apart yet some remained in Poland. Martha and her parents (Joseph and Stella), along with several of the younger children were taken by the Soviet Army to a labor camp in Siberia, along the Eastern Front. Conditions were extremely difficult; Martha worked in the Siberian forestscutting wood in order to provide for her family.During this time, both her parents died due to the conditions. She was eventually able to raft out to mainland Russia, where she eventually madeit to Moscow. There, she was able to join the Polish Army which was reforming under the Allied command of General Anders.

Equipped with sufficient first aid skills to assist combat hospitals, she became a nurse and was quickly given the rank of Lieutenant. Her assignments eventually took her to Italy where she met a patient, also a Polish Lieutenant named Ted. The two wed in 1946 and they were married for 58 years, until Ted passed just last month. After the war, the two were relocated by the Allied Forces to London. In 1948, Martha had a son, George and two years later her daughter, Eva was born.

The couple decided it would be best for the family to move to Chicago, where some of Martha relations were already living. Once there, they started their own business and with that, made a very nice life for the next 25 years. Tragedy struck in 1965 when their only son died of duch*enne musculardystrophy. Once they had adjusted to their terrible loss, they lived comfortably in Indian Head Park and spent winters in Florida. They just moved back to the area in 2003 and had recently moved to the Devonshire in Lisle.
